Just bought the LG 43UD79 monitor for my Mac Pro, some questions...

So far love'n the monitor, it's a 43 inch 4K display and apparently shows 1.06 Billion colours but in system information it shows 24-Bit Colour. Does anybody know why this is?

Second it shows it as a 27-inch monitor rather than 43-inch, seen below:

Two little things that seem to be bothering me so I'm interested to hear your thoughts. Running macOS 10.13.2 with Mac Pro 5,1 with Radeon RX 560.

Hi,

I have had my eye on a large screen monitor but there are a lot of complaints on the internet about the various brands available. This LG model seems the best of the bunch, but not without its shortcomings.

It is not a true 10 bit panel but 8bit plus dithering. Colours: 1.07B (8-Bit +FRC)

And also you might find it is has a BGR rather than RGB pixel layout which some say affects the Macs ability for font smoothing.

How are the screen edges? do you see a shadow around the edge of the screen when sitting close to the monitor?

Even so it is on my list of things to buy this year as I just want a very large screen!

there are good threads about this monitor on other forums but im not sure what the rules are to link to other sites so i suggest you just google "LG 43UD79 review" and have a read.

Thanks for your reply. Yes I was aware of the shadowing around the edges before I bought it. But I did a lot of research beforehand, the other competitors being the Dell and the Viewsonic.

I don’t think your card can really output 10bit properly in desktop or professional apps. If you really want to try, you can use some 3rd party apps to activate 10bit support. However, there is high chance that you will see some errors in colour.

I am not very familiar with the RX560, but even though it can support 10bit. Most likely it just support 10bit HDR gaming in DirectX, may not really generally support 10bit colour. In general, only those really expensive work station card can really support true 10bit.

For screen size, that’s pretty normal that MacOS cannot correctly identify the monitor’s size. AFAIK, it’s just cosmetic, won’t affect anything.

Yes the LG is the best choice at the moment, all the other panels seem to suffer burn in after a few minutes.

did you try the subpixel test? most reviews i have read are from windows uses so it would be good to have an opinion from a mac user.

[doublepost=1515617725][/doublepost]I have the same monitor and trying to get it to work with the 2017 MacBook Pro. Same issues as well! It shows up as a 27 inch monitor for me as well! It shouldn't be this hard! What connection are you using between your Mac and the monitor?

Has anybody found out more about this issue?
My 43UD79 also shows up as "27inch" and the native resolutions are not being offered in the MacOS display preferences.
This is now happening on a Mac Pro 2019 (Catalina) as well as a Trashcan (Mojave)

I've got 2 LG 43UD79s and an Apple Thunderbolt Display connected to a 2013 Mac Pro (Trashcan). Each monitor is connected to each of the three Thunderbolt busses and I'm getting the full resolution for each. For whatever reason, all 3 monitors show up as 27 inch displays in About This Mac / Displays. The LG 43s are connected via DisplayPort cables I got off Amazon and the Thunderbolt Display is connected via a 6ft Thunderbolt cable as the built in Thunderbolt cable isn't long enough to reach my Mac as the Thunderbolt Display is mounted above one of my LG 43s on a VESA mount arm. I'm running macOS 10.15.7 (19H2) on 2013 Mac Pro 12 core w/ d700s and 128GB RAM.
