Apple's suppliers in China probably douce the thermal goo on there with a external machine of some sort..so they probably resorted to the "too much is better than too little / none"..

however

I am inclined to say that the thermal paste you used would be of better quality then the generic/oem stuff they slather on.

Arctic Silver 5 perhaps?

Heh yea, on all my desktop cards I switch out the thermal paste right away. I've done that ever since I got a card about 2 years ago that always had the fan on and was extremely hot (kept having artifacts etc). Turns out there was literally 1/8" of paste under each heatsink and the fan unit as well...
After I took that off it went WAY down in temp and the fan only came on every once in awhile.

But that's the desktop. Its kind of annoying to take apart the laptop, one always risks breaking something when servicing. If it was quick I'd do it immediately too!

Quick, no. But I hear the gains are worth it.

Its not too big of a risk. I had mine open in about 15 minutes, first time.

Lost a screw and didn't replace the goo, just wanted to do a quick dusting of the insides.
