This is false, All the apps I have are updated including apps like the speedtest app I have and other apps that are not
among the most popular ones.
Hilarious. EVERYONE in this thread knows that Apple TV is an utter failure. You alone think developers support tvOS.

This is false
It is definitely true for tvOS games.
All the apps I have are updated
I guess because it isn't happening to your installed apps, it just isn't happening?

These examples were posted on another thread in response to you saying that developers are not dropping tvOS support:
Not sure why you are saying this is false as it is just just my opinion.

But since you brought it up, here are some real world examples of developers dropping support for tvOS version of their apps, while continuing to update iOS versions:

RISK
tvOS - 2.8.0 Dec 13, 2020
iOS - 3.2.1 Aug 17, 2021
Still waiting to hear from the developer, but it is currently no longer working on tvOS, started sometime in the past few weeks.

Kill Shot Bravo
tvOS - 5.0.1 June 26, 2018
iOS - 9.5 Sep 21, 2021
KSB no longer loads on tvOS.

Linda Brown
tvOS - 1.2 Feb 15, 2017
iOS - 3.0.9 Aug 30, 2021
Game no longer loads on tvOS.

Gods of Rome
tvOS - 1.3.0 Dec 6, 2016
iOS - 1.9.6 Feb 11, 2020
It doesn’t load on tvOS.

Dungeon Hunter 5
tvOS - 1.8.0 Mar 15, 2016
iOS - 5.9.1 Sep 23, 2021
It doesn’t load on tvOS.

PAW Patrol Rescue Run HD
tvOS - 1.1.2 Mar 13, 2016
iOS - 3.6 Oct 4, 2017
Paw Patrol still works on tvOS, but the new content (characters, levels, etc.) that is available on the iOS version isn’t available on the tvOS version.

Mikey Jumps
tvOS - Data not available
iOS - 1.0.21 April 9, 2021
Mikey Jumps no longer loads on tvOS.

There are plenty more examples, and if the ones I listed were not good enough for you, Minecraft could also be included, check this out:

From the above MR link:

Sounds like I am not the only one with the thinking that developer support for tvOS apps has been dropping.

The recent announcement that some new Apple Arcade games will not have a tvOS version is just more evidence, imo.
So, clearly there is plenty of evidence that the statement is NOT false.

I actually have an update from the developer of the game RISK, SMG Studios. RISK was consistently in the top-paid apps in the tvOS App Store, but stopped working a few months ago and was removed from the tvOS App Store.

When the game stopped working, I sent a support ticket to SMG Studios, and this was the response:
SMG Studios said:
"Due to the drastically reduced support by 3rd party SDK & plugin providers for tvOS we can no longer support the AppleTV version to the extent we would like to."

SMG Studios is not alone either. If it happened to one of the most popular apps on the tvOS App Store, then it could happen many others (and is).

If that evidence still isn't good enough, check out MR article on the tvOS version of Minecraft being discontinued, and how it is a rising problem for many other tvOS games:

This is what MR had to say about the state of developer support for tvOS:
The removal of the title appears to be the latest example of the video game industry's continuing lack of interest in the Apple TV

Does this mean that Netflix or HBO Max is going to drop tvOS support soon? Probably not, but to the point of the thread, one of the benefits of purchasing the much more expensive Apple TV over the competition is the gaming support, but that appears to be fading fast.

AFAIK, none of the other options have the ability to stream content from your Mac over LAN. (Correct me if I'm wrong.) You can use AirPlay but that is clunkier and not as convenient. This is extremely important to me. I still use my Mac as the center of my media management.

Compared to a tv with airplay and Apple TV apps, an Apple TV is portable for trips and things. Who is gonna bring their new TV with them on vacation or at hotels and stuff?

Chromecast requires a phone and Roku or Amazon fire sticks are fine though some prefer Apple products for better integration.

I have always found that relying on my TV for smart services is hit and miss. At best they start of decent but then updates are slow or non-existent. On the other hand, ATV is always updated and consistent. So I would rather focus on the TV I want for the viewing aspect and not worry about the smart options.

Then when I travel (or when I can travel again) the ATV can be thrown in the case. I also use Apple Fitness and the list goes on.

It's an Apple device I really love to have.

Apparently the processing of video and audio is better on tv. As others have said already, I much prefer the interface on tv than what what LG offers, and LG is one of the better ones.

If you go all in with Apple, for example you have One, it's not just video streaming you can do:
Music has music videos
Playing games with Arcade (and other games from the App Store)
Fitness+ is great on a big screen, especially compared to iPhone.
AirPlay/SharePlay
Listening via AirPods and audio sharing
Siri and HomeKit to control devices
Showing photos.

There are probably alternatives and maybe even better options, for all of the above, but it's great for it all to be in one device. Apple could do even more with tv if it wants to and promote it better. The original poster's question is valid, considering video apps are already in TVs and the tv is pretty expensive, but because of the above, I use tv all the time.

I agree with your point. I am using Apple TV Series 3 since many years with my not-so-smart TV. I have started looking for a new 4K Apple TV as the Series 3 lost Youtube support recently, and shocked with the price difference between Apple TV 4K and a simple Android TV stick / Xiaomi Mi Box. I agree that there is a difference in terms of quality, performance, etc, but still, I am not sure if it really worth it or not.

To push the adoption, I would discount it to a level around 80-100 USD and then it might be a choice. Right now, it is unnecessarily expensive. Nobody cares about gaming features or other stupid stuff - just give us Apple services + 3rd party app support for streaming, and that's it.

It's an extremely overpriced streaming box, but:

- It is one of only two options (the other being nVidia Shield) which offers full support for playback of most media types. If you have a NAS at home where you're ripping 4K Blu-Ray to, Infuse will easily play it for you. The Plex client on a Smart TV or Fire Stick won't handle, say, 4K HEVC HDR content with subtitles.

- Unlike the vast majority of its competitors, there's no ads on the interface.

- It pairs *very* easily to your Airpods, which can come in handy when you're watching TV late at night.

- iOS lets you control Apple TV seamlessly without requiring an extra app. It's always going to be available as long as your iPhone or iPad are in the same network. YMMV on whether this is useful - my wife hates controlling it with her phone, whereas I almost exclusively do this and pretty much never use the remote. I've used the phone app for Fire TV and Roku, and they feel much clunkier in comparison.

It's a terrible value proposition, honestly. But I value iOS integration, an unobtrusive interface, and file compatibility enough that it's still my pick.

I just bought an LG C1, upgrading from an 7 year old Sony TV, and it has all streaming apps including Apple TV built in. The Fire TV stick can be had around $70 with all streaming options as well. Buying these external streaming devices can also be clunky as I have a PS5 and a blu ray player connected to 2 other ports, so an external streaming device means I have to constantly fiddle with my TV remote to turn on the appropriate port and then switch to the device remote. It’s so much easier to just push Netflix on the tv remote and be done with it.

What is the selling point for paying $180 for the ATV 4K when the TV itself and Fure TV can get it done for basically free?
Couldn't that be said for pretty much any Apple product? I mean, whether it's a watch, phone, tablet, or computer, there is almost always a cheaper alternative. And yet we buy Apple. Why? For me it's the beautiful UI, the quality and style of craftsmanship, the ecosystem, the support, and ultimately I just love Apple products and most of their services. :)

Is not trust ANY smart TV to not spy on us.

So for me any new TV I purchase must have the ability to function without it needing any network access and accept all inputs from HDMI only - and that's where the Apple TV comes in.

That's just the reason right there..cheaper copycat clones from China √

Anyone ever try to use a Samsung smart TV? I bought a new 65' one during Black Friday sales last year from Costco - we don't buy a high end TV but it was $400 Black Friday pricing so it wasn't a low end one either.

Setting that up was the most frustrating experience I had ever had setting up an electronic device. Not only was it laggy as heck but I spent an hour unsuccessfully trying to set it up before giving up and going and purchasing an Apple TV to bypass the TV's UI completely. The Apple TV software included in the Samsung TV software was so slow that my old Apple TV was faster (and I considered that slow).

That's why I'll buy an Apple TV every time - they last forever and I'll gladly use them than some terrible TV interface that is laggier than a 486.

The way developers have fled and are continuing to flee the platform, Apple TV is clearly swirling the drain. Apple simply does not care about Apple TV.

Examples please? Older versions of the hardware have been dropped from support but I have yet to find content I have wanted to watch that didn't have a current app.

For me, it was the practicality. I am able to use my cable account (Spectrum) through my ATV 4K, so that's one less thing cluttering my entertainment center.

Also, at only 2 years old, my LG lags a little on stuff as simple as Crunchyroll or Youtube, but works flawlessly on my ATV.

After quickly scrolling through this thread, I have a silly question. Are apps for Apple TV the same or similar to iPhone or iPad?
There are apps I can't use on my Android devices. Many apps only show access to Apple or Android, meaning iPhone and iPad.
I would never want a smart TV.
I have experience with both Amazon and Roku devices.
The higher price for ATV is probably well worth it.
Cord Cutters News no longer allows comments, but it used to be said nothing competes with Apple TV, or if it does, costs about the same.
I would buy Apple TV immediately (if not sooner) if Xfinity did what Spectrum has done.
I hate the whole Xfinity cable box system.
Chances are I would love Apple Arcade!
Even the old DOS version of The Oregon Trail is fun.
Is there a way to preview Apple TV apps before I plunk down the cash for a new device?

Apple TV is a unique interface that is really quite fun to use. What I love about it is that you can use your iPhone as a remote for Apple TV.

Smart TVs aren't a bad thing, they're just so poorly programmed and laggier than a Gateway PC trying to defrag its PC while you're trying to run AOE. <cough> I'm old I know.

ATV is nicer than Roku imo - but it's very similar concept - but I'm biased cuz I've been using Apple TV for a long time.

I've found gaming on Apple TV to be not so great. I don't do much gaming but gaming on the iPad and air playing it to the TV is far better than gaming on Apple TV.

IMO, the Apple TV 4K is still the best streaming box, it is just overpriced for what is currently does.

The HW is capable of so much more, but basically being wasted as a streaming box, and is overpowered for what most people probably use it for.

Gaming is hit or miss.

A lot of iOS and iPadOS version of games are available for no additional cost on tvOS, and are seamless when going from an iPhone to the Apple TV version. Sometimes you have to pay for the tvOS version.

A big problem with tvOS is that many gaming developers have been dropping support for the tvOS version of their apps while still updating and supporting the iOS versions.

I personally wouldn't recommend investing in tvOS apps if your intent is to use them on the Apple TV, as you might be like me, investing in hundreds of dollars in tvOS apps only to have support for some of those apps to be dropped.

There are some good games for the Apple TV though, and still some free ones if you do not want to invest any money.

Apple Arcade would be the best place to find some entertaining games to try out.

Oceanhorn 2 is on Apple Arcade, and was very impressive, imo. The game ended up being huge. You start on an island, and I thought the game would only take place on the island, and I was wrong. There are many towns, dungeons, a huge open world, and The White City is gigantic! So many Easter eggs, the game would keep you busy for 50-hours+. It was modeled off of The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild.

Okay, what is HW?
It is frustrating how people must abriviate everything.
I use a tablet for everything, typing in portrait mode with one finger.
Before I'd consider a Mac, I'd go iPad/Apple TV.
Then again, I could use an iPad and Roku.
For me, cost is everything.
