You really have to pay attention...

We currently have ~200ish channels with DirectTV at $76 per month (this is not a promo price).

Hulu - $8.99 month
Netflix - $8.75 month
Amazon Prime - $99/year
Sling - $20 month
HBO streaming- $15 month

Before it's all over instead of giving DirectTV $76 every month I'm spreading approximately the same amount to 4-7 other companies in dribs and drabs.

Right. Piecing it out like this is a little silly. If you're going to opt for all of these services you might as well just get a regular cable subscription.

I pay $9/mo for Netflix and use free OTA channels - that's it. :)

Very true. Hence why it makes sense some content from other places and utilize OTA channels if at all possible so we wouldn't merely be spreading out costs elsewhere instead of cutting it.

Do you really need all that? We cut the cord about 3 years ago I think. We have Hulu and Netflix (and OTA) and that's more than enough for us. In fact, we could probably do away with Hulu as we only use it for new episodes we missed but you can probably get those from the station's web site. We do pay for Amazon Prime but only for the free shipping so I don't include that cost.

One of the big reasons we cut the cord was so we would cut back on the amount of crap we watched just because it was there. If we went into it trying to replace everything we watched on Comcast with separate streaming services, it probably wouldn't work out financially.

No, we don't have all that - I was just saying that if you're not careful you can unbundle yourself out of the frying pan into the fire.

all this cable cutting my result in my costs going up as the shows I want are not all on one provider.

If you have all those, your monthly total is $60.99 per month. That's savings of $15/month or $180 per year (compared to the $76 per month DirecTV), and presumably you are getting all the same content in a play-on-demand format. Why wouldn't you want to pay less for the same thing?

If you get an OTA antenna and a Channelmaster DVR+, you'll have the ability to DVR all the networks shows (ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, PBS, CW) without any recurring monthly costs. So you won't need Hulu then.

I use the Channelmaster DVR+ with OTA for that stuff, Netflix for lots of other shows (they are GREAT for kids shows especially). And that's pretty much it for paying for TV. We have Amazon Prime for the shipping but we've never used it for streaming (haven't seen anything it is that Netflix doesn't). Don't know what Sling is for, and I might do the free trial of HBO Now but probably wouldn't pay $15/month for it after that.

This is definitely an interesting caveat in cord-cutting. Indeed, my family and I no longer "channel-surf." When we sit down to turn on the tv, it's for a specific show and that only. I've noticed our productivity go up from the nephew's schoolwork to my parent's schoolwork (they're back in college) and work, to my own schoolwork and work! Time spent in front of the tube decreased along with our monetary output.

Remember, time is indeed money, too. :)

One problem we have living in the mountains of Appalachia is picking up OTA channels without investing in a mega-outdoor-antenna.

The one thing keeping me from pulling the trigger is being able to pick up our local ABC/CBS/NBC/Fox/PBS without a heavy investment in OTA hardware.

What would be the cost of that investment vs a pay TV contract?

I cut the cable about a year ago and only used Netflix and Hulu plus my internet service for downloading movies from different services (apple, xbox, etc)...we recently moved and couldnt pass up the offer from Verizon so we have Fios TV, phone and internet...if it gets too expensive in the near future, we will downgrade the phone and TV if needed again...we shall see.
