But also look at what the OP said, that phone never leaves the house with the kid. So basically it's a cheap way for their lazy parents to call their kids down to dinner.

Back when i had my Motorola razr flip phone, i actually typed more accurate than i do now. The querty keyboard on my iphone is what has gotten me lazy in my opinion.

So what if the kid wants to call someone? Should they have to borrow the parent's phone every time?

Yeah, T9 forces you to spell correctly, unlike iPhone auto-correct or spellcheck in Word. If you want to complain about anything, it should be spellcheck. That's what really causes people to be lazy.

Jeez. I know if I was 8 years old I would love to have an iphone to play with, though, im not sure I would give my child an iphone to use until he reached an age were the features of the iphone would come in handy, (like teen years?)...

The part I do like about your brother having an iphone is that it is a first generation with parental controls set up on it... So he has limits but still gets to simulate himself to the high-techness that is the iphone.

Yes, or use the landline...

In my opinion T9 is a horrible feature in cellphones... I've never used it and no one I know uses it. And yes, autocorrect does encourage laziness, which is why its not good for an eight year old to be using it.

l don't know about you but AutoCorrect exists to pass me off, rather than be useful.

Occasionally it annoys me but in my opinion it is really useful... When your typing fast and forget to put spaces in between words, hit the wrong letter, don't put in a full stop or cap letter etc autocorrect gets it 95% of the time. Its especially good once it learns slang and unofficial words. It does make me lazy though; I never put in full stops or cap letters on my iPhone now because autocorrect does it for me ;)

My only complaint about autocorrect is that it's very annoying to train. But, at least Apple's autocorrect learns what word you want to use after you x it out three times. ;)

Eh. I had a cell when I was 8, GTE... those were the days! Got a smartphone when I was 14 though, but hey, just how some people roll. If your kid is responsible with it, don't see why not. It personally fueled my lust for technology and the field I decided to go into, but thats just me.
