My Uncle's Mac Mini started to not work properly, he called me and told me what was going on with it and I told him he needed a new hdd. He didn't bother listening to me and let some friend of his look at it since I'm half a world away (Hawaii -> Georgia). So his friend didn't do squat except open it and claim it was from dirt and dust. In the mean time my Uncle's job gave him a new MBP. So my Uncle let the Mini sit for 4 months....

Finally he decided he'd just give it to me to see what I could do with it. :D I got it today and opened it up. Took ram that I kept outta my iMac when it got upgraded and a 250gb hdd I got on clearance for $35. About an hour later and a fresh install of Snow Leopard, I have a wonderful little Mac Mini that works just fine. :D It was dirty, don't get me wrong, but I cleaned it out and it runs like a champ.

I was really shocked how easy it was to do the upgrade. If you have a Mac Mini and have been afraid of opening it and doing these basic upgrades, don't be scared. It was simple and straight forward. I used the ifixit tutorial like anyone else would and it was just clear cut and simple.

So it means you can keep the Mac Mini now? Did he give it to you forever or just to fix it?
And what generation is it? Tell us the spec :)

Congrats! I just got one too.
My super drive is really loud so I might take it out and do the double hdd. Was it easy to get it open?
What are you going to use it for?

He said I could have the computer so yeah, it's mine. It's a 1.83 C2D with 2gb ram. Kinda sucks the 800 ram runs at 667 in there but at least I kept my old iMac ram so that was a nice free upgrade.

I do have some complaints. It seems the ethernet port doesn't work thankfully the wireless does. The Superdrive is loud so it's gonna go at some point but I'm not surprised by that since my iMac's drive reads discs but stopped burning them about 2yrs after purchase. I never use the thing anyway so... Other issues... I decided that the PRAM battery didn't need to be changed even thought I had the whole thing apart. From what I know it's only to keep the time and date while the computer is unplugged. Well the time and date erased when I finished putting it all together and testing it on the kitchen table then took it to the room it's gonna be used in. So should I pop it open and replace that battery?

Also, I'm outta USB ports because the mac keyboard needs a usb extension cable to reach where the Mini is. Because of that, the computer won't use the usb ports on the keyboard! I'm using the Apple usb extension cable.
