Just got a used 2g iphone, what next?

Hi guys, my brother just chucked me his 2g iphone which he has been using for a while now. I guess he got bored with it. I have never used one, what should I do next?

The version is 1.1.3 from the About screen. I believe it's a jailbroken as in I can use it on any network. Should I upgrade to the latest firmware? Will that spoil anything?

What others Softwares should I get? I'm on Vista.
