It happened in an underpass in Leytonstone.

Not angry about it- just rather annoyed. If i had my wits about me i could have outsmarted him as I saw him get off the night bus with me and realising he was following me. I should have gone to the near-by petrol station and hung around there. if he mugged me he would have been at least caught on CCTV.

I DID take the Sim card out of my phone before i give it to him, I made him wait. So thats a minor victory.

He let you take the SIM card out? No offence but that was a very lucky mugging, here in Lambeth such niceties rarely happen.

That said I have yet to be mugged or attacked in many many years in London, alhamdulillah.

My attempted mugging was in Lambeth too. Near the top of Walworth Road. Some areas you just need to avoid.

I used to live in halls near Lambeth North tube station, and probably about a third of us had at some point during that year been the victim of anti-social behaviour.

The only thing that has happened to me is being attacked by some crazy woman on the tube last summer, but she wasn't mugging me, she was just a bit messed up. I just pushed her off the train at the next stop. The worst thing was that my trousers were covered in beer :(

I think that was a brave move, and a very apt response. I bet he wasn't expecting that. And then you had it stolen a couple of weeks later? Man, some people really are c***s. I despair, sometimes. :(

Yeah, but I don't think I would have tried it was I not able to get away so quikly. :D

Whats sucks even more is that the stolen bike was borrowed from a friend, and it was a place I locked it up many times before.

I found the line "Do I look like a victim? Do yourself a favour and F**k off!" worked the one time two little sods tried that with me. Say it forthrightly and menacingly whilst pulling yourself up to full height, and back it up with "I'm giving you nothing. Now f**k off!" in the same tone of voice They rely on you being scared. Show them you're not, but don't actually make any moves towards them. Otherwise they may panic and actually stab you (not good).

Sorry to hear about that though. London sucks sometimes.

Yeah, you're right, if you dont follow the script, they can be thrown off.

Unfortunetly, i'm a short, scrawny person, who cant put up much of a front. I can shout uncontrollably loud though.

I dont think he was that tough to be honest. I could have done a Darren Brown on him and totally thrown him into confustion i reckon. I dont reckon he was armed.

its the first time that happened to me in 4 years, apart from one incident in Maryland station where i manage to cycle off very fast and kick him off.

Hopefully you wont get mugged or any awfull ***** like that to you- insha'allah.

Has she considered pepper spray or mace? Or maybe one of those personal alarms? Something that she could defend herself with.

Yes we have considered many options but face it she looks muggable, she is 5'5" and petite build and dresses well because of her job.
I feel that mace or pepper spray can back fire on the person defending him/herself. I you ever used it you know what I mean.
She has an extensive self-defense background, so if it does get ugly she can defend herself but why take the risk? She is one of those small looking people who can knock out a guy with one punch < yay mom U have seen her do it on occasion. She swims 5 km three times a weeek so her upper body is insanely strong for a female, plus she is a fantastic runner. By the time the muggers react to her dumping her purse out she is gone...

The sad thing all the muggins occured in broad daylight in a pretty busy street, no one stopped to intervene except one time where two elderly Dutch couple called the police.

A similar thing happened to me here i Sydney, except they just got crappy phone an $4

now i carry police strength pepper spray and i will repeatedly soccer kick their head if they try it again

another part of me sez just let them go, i think i would only really do that if i was being physically attacked , a phone and a few buck are not worth it

btw
i have rifles and boy did have to jump through may hoops to get my licence and i still do, its ridicules New Zealand has a similar law to the US and their gun crime is lower than ours

If regular people can't have guns, The criminals will still get them and they won't have to worry about the person that they are robbing pulling their own gun and shooting them.

If you decide to use pepper spray or mace, practice with it before toting it around. The last thing you want is to need to use it and not know how to work the thing. Also, remember to point it in the right direction! :)

Humm.. practicing with a mace. How would one go about doing that? (I have one, retractable and everything)
