After countless months on the boards to see if I should wait for Rev 2 or if ssd is really worth the price, I have finally come home with my MBA and it was very unexpected. We drove home from a week vacation from Florida. We arrived back in NJ around 6 and my computers hard drive crashed before I left so I knew I had to deal with it when I got back. I decided to take a trip to the Apple store and I forced my gf to come despite being on the road for more than 20 hours. Well I am now typing on my 1.6/hdd Air and I must say it is very fast. I left the store and unboxed it at my gf's work which is two stores down and noticed a scratch, I immediately took it back and got it exchanged. This one is a beauty, it is in flawless condition and it is very quick. I am more than happy with my purchase and I am glad I did not go for the ssd (no offense). I wish I could have coughed up the extra $500 but after playing around with the two, it was not worth it to me. I installed isatpro. Any other recommendations?

Congrats..a most excellent machine. I don't really need one myself but think it's a great piece. Of course you may have to hear people talk some crap about fans and heat but whatever..not sure that's a real issue.

Very cool! It's a great machine, and at this point, I think ssd is just a novelty. I'm sure it'll be the standard some day, but right now, it like trying to buy a hard drive in the 1980s: expensive!

    Enjoy your Air!

    Enjoy :)

Where was the scratch at? Did they give you any trouble to exchange it? I am asking because I am having problems with my store :(.

They did not give me a hard time because I went in there with a defensive manner. Usually I am submissive and can be talked into many things but I showed them I meant business. The scratches were on the tap about 3 inches from the apple logo. I told her for 1800 my laptop should be flawless. She exchanged it without a word. I examined the 2nd one and it was flawless. It is now on my lap in the dark, I'm in love with the backlit keyboard. The fans turned on twice, once when I played a 720p video and the other when I installed updates. Im in love with this machine, it is perfect! If anyone has questions let me know.

And yet the girlfriend went along after a 20 hour journey! Maybe she planned to make you submit and get one for her instead :p

As someone who upgraded from the 1.6 HDD model to the 1.8 SSD, let me assure you that it isn't a novelty, but the 1.6 is still a wonderful machine.

Is the tapered front edge uncomfortable if your are typing on your lap or in bed?

It's great that the MBA has an available SSD. What this means to me is a $200 upgrade in a few months.

I can't remember from your thread and am too lazy to look it up ;) but did you get yours at an Apple Store? I do remember it was in Colorado, and if the Nuggets are any indication of a commitment to excellence . . .

You are right, mine is from CO and I stated that I had problems with the store manager. I even called Apple and they only offered me repairs since I bought it from the retail store.

However, I am not bothered by the scratches/dents/scuffs as much as by the core shutdown. It shuts down after 10 minutes of watching a video in youtube or equivalent . I am typing this now with one core running to max while the other is dead!!!

I might just return this even if I pay the 10% (since I am still on my 5th day) and I will just stick to my 3.06 iMac and maybe get a new MBP whenever they come out.

Glad to hear that, but I'm curious as to what you see as the advantage. You obviously think it's worth the price difference, but I haven't read anything that makes me agree.

Not trying to be a jerk or anything, but I'm really curious.

Well, I found that there is no advantage that is worth the price difference whatsoever. The difference is around 5 seconds for opening applications :D
