well it arrived a few days ago but i finally got to it today and here are my impressions:

this thing is big (in a good way) i would have hated a MB. first thing I did was register for a new battery it said the battery was eligible but not the MBP I was thinking WTF? 512 MB for certain apps is okay but ill be upgrading asap to like 1 GB. also the 80 GB Hard Drive is too little for me. but ill wait until the 160 GB Satas get cheaper. i also didnt like safari very much is there any difference between that and firefox? is macs firefox and different than its pc counter part which i LOVE.

OS X is F-WORDING AWMESOME too bad im using my PC to type this. I downloaded about 7 widgets already haha. its just hard for me to copy/paste (i tried control + C and V) and im used to right clicking (i was updating the os while i was playing with it. i think right click is in the update).

Any must have apps? I used coconut battery and it stated my MBP is 6 months old also my battery is at 98% which is good but any tips to keep it that high or higher?(calibrating, which i assume is drain battery then recharge), but im unsure of other important apps besides adium which is amazing. I really need MS Office for school but I will wait for the UB or a huge price cut. I also intend on streaming videos and music from my pc would quicktime be sufficient? i intend on playing. avi file(what should i convert them to?)

also this thing is hot, i think i could cook my breakfast on it any way to cool it down a bit? since i do like using a lap top on my lap (even if apple calls it a notebook) also it whines but just a little bit and never consistently and doesnt moo either. which im happy about.

sorry about the long thread but im happy and currious yes i've read the mac beginners guide three times and thanks to it ill be customizing my mac like i never thought i could.

i took one pic but my phones charging since it didnt fully charge last night due to the storm.

thanks

the states for now
to right click to c and p using the trackpad mouse. click and hold. in most apps that will mimic a right click. or get an external mouse.

What's the obsession with pics of a machine that has been out since... erm, almost the start of the year?

I am more interested in seeing pics of MBPs with the new easy access harddrive panel.

Well, I'd suggest Adium for all your chatting needs. It doesn't support video/voice conferencing but it's great if you don't want to run msn, ichat, yahoo chat, google chat at the same time. Another must have app would have to be VLC Player, Flip4Mac. Of course I bet you knew that already. :p

True dat, although thanks to certain shortfalls I am left running Adium, Skype and iChat at the same time. Still, so much better than the official AIM and MSN clients.

Nice on getting the MBP! I'm hoping to get one in about a month :D. About the heat, I suggest getting a laptop cooling pad like this one. It's the one I'm currently using, first it gets the laptop from touching your lap which allows air to travel under the laptop and it uses two fans to cool it down. It plugs into a USB port, I've been very happy with it and I got a $10 mail in rebate so it only cost me $20 :D. The way to right click is to hold two fingers on the trackpad and then click the mouse button. Calibrating the battery is letting the battery drain all the way so the computer goes into sleep mode and then letting it sit for several hours to terminate sleep mode. As for must have apps I would suggest isquint to convert movies to iPod format, also Handbrake to rip dvds onto your computer. As has been said before flip4mac is a must have, I use transmission and tomato torrent as my bittorrent clients. also mactracker is fun to play around with to see the history of macs.

Several stands are available, my fav being the iCurve. Its expensive, and begs for BT keyboard+mouse, but it keeps the machine a good 3-5 C cooler than it would be on the desk. There are other stands which can be used on your legs and still supply air curculation around the computer. If you're really stingey, a thick hardcover book, like the Guiness World Records book will suffice :p

Doubt it, he's got a MacBook Pro now. In 11 days time maybe a new one will be out, with all the fun and games a new product brings - Merom's not exactly flowing freely supply-wise, waiting 11 days might mean you wait another month.

I'd rather a bird in the hand to be honest.

Way to rain on a guy's parade, nice work.

Congrats. I have a MBP as well and it has been the best machine I could ever ask for. Sure, there's likely going to be an upgrade soon, but a week after those are out, the rumor mongers will start salivating over whatever the next iteration will be. My machine could be replaced by a newer one tomorrow, and I'd still be 100% satisfied because it's that good of a machine.

Enjoy!

Congrats!! Enjoy it and don't listen to the negative people. It will suck in 11 days though once your brand new MBP stops working because a new one is out. Apple does that you know, you sucker!!

JK, enjoy your MBP I hope it serves you well.
