Anyone able to confirm the amount of SSD space available out-of-the-box?

Currently awaiting my 256GB.

Mine had 482 gb when I unboxed it

Also in disk utility it says I have a 499.42 gb hard drive :/

This is because they (most likely) calculate you to have 512 thousand million bytes. Whereas the disk utility uses base 1024 (not base 1000). If you take 512000 megabytes, that's 500 gigabytes. You're actually fortunate that they didn't calculate 500 *1000 *1000 *1000, because that's only 476 gigabytes (with base 1024). Or maybe disk utility mixes up base 1000 and 1024, too.

This mix-up is a typical conflict between technologists ("Let's use 1024 because it's 2^10 and computers are binary") and marketeers ("Let's use 1000 because then the number looks bigger"). The drive in this PC is marketed as a 250GB one by its manufacturer, yet Windows in its partitioning tools talks about 232,88GB.

I guess OS X is using about 17,5GB then.

Hi there, I am waiting for my 13" i7, 8GB,256SDD to be built and arrives hopefully within 2 weeks. 2 questions:

From out of box state, are there any programs/folders that should be deleted due to being unused by the average person?...

>>> 8GB of Sleepimage gets my vote :)

I don't have a use for an 8GB Sleepimage to save my RAM content.

If you just delete it, OS X will recreate it the next time you close your lid or let your computer go to sleep. I am not sure I understand your reasoning, unless you never let your MBA go to sleep by itself and always shutdown before closing the lid.

You can remove it permanently via:
sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0

I usually close my apps when done and have no need to save RAM content when I close the lid.

Indeed, but it seems counterproductive to me. You're also disabling safe sleep and risk losing data if you use apps that don't support autosave. Each to their own I suppose though.

Just to add to my comment: The Sleepimage sends all of your RAM data to that file every time you put your computer to sleep so that you don't lose everything IF your computer loses power.

In theory, you should not loose power while in sleep mode... but then again I'm sure someone here will have a story about loosing power :D

Yes, that's exactly what safe sleep is that I mentioned previously.

At any point in your ownership of the 2012 ultimate 13" air, have you run across the spinning rainbow beachball? This normally occurs when the system is accessing something large or low memory.

i have the ultimate too and i'm new to mac and I've had that round rainbow spinning wheel/ball happen few times on 1 occasion, i think i was browsing some pictures online when that happened or maybe i was using evernote can't remember which one it was. is it a bad thing?

No, you should be fine.
