Curious, anyone have any istat temperature readings to do some comparisons to the last generation 8 core models?

I remember the 2.8GHz 8 core model I had with 16GB of RAM used to heat up my 12x14 room (pretty good sized room).

For comparison, here are some Early 2008 Mac Pro stats:

CPUA is 53 degrees, and your 100% idle. How long were you idle? My 2006 2x2.66 at 10% CPU usage, both CPU's are around 32-34 degrees with fan speeds at minimum.

53 seems hot for being idle.

Interesting. You have an extra fan in the list.

By the way: if you arrange iStat's display
vertically (press the 's' key), you may get
    to see more temperatures.

The Nehalems run much hotter than the Penryns because they have an integrated memory controller, among other things.

The Nehalems will all idle at about 35-50 Celsius, and load at over 70.

Don't let the temperatures scare you, the Nehalems are built to run at those temperatures.

I bet that your monitor and the light you are using will heat up your room much faster than computer...

    Hardly.

24" Cinema Display does at most 212W when charging a macbook (60W).
    Add in 2 40W lights and you're at 232W.

The MP probably idles around that, and goes a lot higher during load.

Have you upgraded the RAM in your quad? We are wondering if it can go to 12 or 16GB... Thanks!

    Exactly. :)

Don't for get those who order the HD 4870 will see an even higher bump as well, as it seems to idle ~150W. ;)

Here is a comparison between the 08 model vs. the 09 model.

Power usage is amazingly good for this class machine. Past Mac Pros would hit the 550 watt range under full load; the MP09 maxes out at about 350 watts under the most severe load.

Wow thats a HUGE difference, I bet it wont get my room as hot anymore!

I got my 2.66 quad-core Mac Pro in stock configuration today and also noticed that it runs quite a lot hotter than my old '06 Mac Pro. It usually idled at about 25°C on both CPUs while the '09 idles at mid-40's. Well, I guess thats normal :p

my 2.66 (eight) consistently runs between 120 degrees and 159. after about an hour of rendering and transcoding last night CPU A was higher... i want to say in the neighborhood of 170.

it sits between my desk and dresser with four inches of space on both sides, nothing in front of it and 8 inches space from the wall behind it.
