Did you remove all your external USB, Thunderbolt etc... devices prior to the update? I had a similar issue after 001 and had to do a restore on my 2017 iMac. There was allot of information after regarding removing external peripherals before these Mojave Security Updates.

2021-002 and 2021-003 went smooth since removing my external peripherals prior to the update. Hope you get it figured out. :)
Hi guys,

been a great reader of the forums as I always find all my issue resolutions on here so I appreciate all the feedback you folks provide to the community.

I just updated my iMac Mojave with the security update 2021-003 and I had my external hard drive plugged in throughout the process. After the update installed my Mac has become absolutely sluggish and very slow. Boot up is slow, launching apps is slow, rainbow circle all over the place.

Is this due to the fact that I left the USB external drive plugged in through the update process?

what can I do to resolve this now? Is the best option to format and reinstall Mojave and then the security update again?

Please advise

How many days has it been since the "successful" update? Is your google drive now accessible?

The update was completed yesterday. I didn’t mention having a Google drive so I’m not sure if you misread my post or if it’s a testing mechanism that I’m not aware of lol 🙂

Sorry, you’re correct, my error. I’d give your Mac a few days and see if things improve. Since it is functional I’d don’t think I’d do a full restore. Try shutting it off, and unplug it for 10min then restart. Eject and unplug your USB devices first, then plug them back in after the restart.

Lol no worries!

thanks for the advice. I’ll try your suggestion out and will report back in a few days. I truly appreciate your help man.

I'm going to restore my MacBook Pro from Time Machine from before the security update. I can't copy files off of this system with this update in place. I get Finder hanging on all kinds of copy processes. I was moving everything from this system to two other Mojave systems but it isn't working. So restore from Time Machine to other systems, then copy files to two other systems, then reformat and reinstall Mojave and probably put it up for sale.

fwiw, I have 3 external drives (SSD and 2 HDD) plus an Adobe Creative Clouds folder and I have never (that I can recall) unplugged those drives prior to an update, always left them plugged in and have not encountered issues.
That's just my experience ...

Yes, it’s not an consistent experience. Some are not effected. Certainly caused chaos for me with 001 however.

I can definitely appreciate that, I have 75k photos and my entire iTunes on external…
I’m currently debating if i should update my iMac to Big Sur…
About 2 years ago Aperture crashed on me and despite backup … i ended up switching to Lightroom, what a nightmare that was

Thanks Glideslope. To make a long debugging session short, the root cause was a permissions issue in the /private/var/db/KernelExtensionManagement directory. It's related to this github thread for a totally unrelated issue: https://github.com/pqrs-org/Karabiner-Elements/issues/2373

In reading the GDrive and kernel logs, I found enough clues to go spelunking through some google searches to find why the kernel extension wasn't loading properly. I have no idea how the restricted flag got unset, but that was the issue for me.

FWIW, I updated to 003 from the package on an external drive, and did not have any issues, nor in the past following similar practice.

I don't recall the origins of that advice, and may have followed it a few times in the past, but it's not a step I consciously take before performing updates.

I do, however, do an Onyx pass, and have it clean up the caches and run the maintenance scripts before applying the update.

I miss Aperture. I really could have a decent workflow especially after I installed Nik Suite of extensions. It never got the attention from Apple it deserved. Still irritates me to this day.

For those who are unaware.
You can determine which 'build number' = which version of the Security update you have installed as shown in the pic.

I installed it when I did the security update, it was a separate installer ...
It was no longer available on my system today. I installed the security update first thinking it'll show up afterwards, but didn't.

so Safari 14.1 did not get installed? Try the Appstore, Updates.
Apple does not make it easy, I'm not aware of a support site from where you could download :(

Apple has pulled Safari 14.1.

Safari 14.1 installed fine on my computer, but Google Drive stopped working again after the update.

Hmmh, wonder why, it installed fine on my iMac together with the security update
I did too on my work computer, but waited for my personal Mac since Apple has been known to pull updates due to issues. Maybe due to issues with Google Drive (few posts up).

There are some threads on this forum of people having all kinds of problems with Safari 14.1.
Thanks, wasn't really paying attention as I do not have any issues, or, have not yet encountered those
