iPad Pro Just lost 30 Safari tabs. Disappeared.

I’ve done this before, it’s incredibly frustrating. Basically it’s treating that instance of Safari you swiped up on like a browser window that you closed (because you can have multiple “windows“ or instances of Safari open at one time on iPad OS, it makes sense that you wouldn’t want each one to have the same set of tabs open in that case).
There should be an option to ”open recently closed tabs” like the desktop has, IMO, or a way to restore a window or session. (Maybe there is an it’s just not intuitive or I’m not bright enough to figure it out.)
Even if it, by default, created a sort of temporary tab group so that if you were to close that instance of Safari, you could still get back to / restore that set of tabs— that would work for me.

Did me what favor? Many of them are tabs with work content or stuff I want to go back and check. Now they are all gone. Can’t even find them in history. Or, do you like Safari crashing at the critical moment? Or, do you think opening 480 tabs should get punished somehow? Not to mention those 480 tabs don’t slow down my phone in any way.
Yes, the issue is that it's not actually a separate instance, it's as you described more like an additional browser window. One of the reasons I do not like this feature as I was looking forward to actually using separate instances, but that isn't how it works. Other browsers like Chrome at least have a feature to bring a closed window back immediately, if you close it accidentally and notice it soon enough.
I haven't used the Chrome or Firefox themed apps on iOS that utilize Safari underneath, but perhaps these have that restoring feature that would help OP in the future?

well, there is quite some strong “indication” that open tabs contrary to tab groups are a volatile form of keeping opened websites “safe” in Safari, like e.g. the dialogue when clearing cache and cookies:
Tab Group are - as Din Djarin would probably put it - the way. 🤓

Wait, what? Are you saying you normally keep (dozens? hundreds?) of browser tabs open all the time? I honestly don't think that's the way tabs were intended to be used. If I have more than a half-dozen tabs open I start to freak out. Yes it's your device so use it the way you want, but maintaining each tab uses RAM and system resources that might be better utilized elsewhere. Just sayin'.
