    Hi,

Currently own a 2008 Mac Pro and have just 'won' a 2009 quad on eBay, which will soon be a '2010' 3.42GHz 6-core.

Obviously moving my data drives is no issue, but the main OS drive on the 2008 is an SSD, which ideally, i'd just throw into the 2009 machine and keep working.

I assume that's fine, right? No need for a clean install or anything, just throw everything into the 2009 and keep working?

    Cheers!

    Ed

You will be able to move it over without a problem. Only a few settings such as audio and display settings will revert back to defaults, but everything else with work without a problem.

OP. I did exactly what you are describing. It will bootup no problem. (you may get a delay on startup if its not your only bootup disk/partition -- other than that no problem)

However, some programs will notice you have an entirely new computer. So settings, information, paths etc will need to be re-entered, re-established, etc.

You will have to move into new HD sled as 2008 and 2009 use different lengths.

Good news is 2009 you are less likely to pinch your fingers between drive and sled. (3.5 HD)

As an SSD you may need to put it in OD bay until you get right length.

When looking for new CPU, at least com are a X5690 to W3690, will allow use of all RAM slots

Thanks all. Moved over to 2009 machine and it's been no hassle at all. Put 3 x 8GB ram sticks in, waiting to find a 3690 and a decent (but quiet) gfx card.

I tried to move my 8800GT over from the 2008, but the fans kept kicking in and the performance sucked. The GT120 will have to do for now. I use Logic X on a 30" ACD mainly, and haven't really noticed any problems with the GT120.

    Thanks again!
