Fed Ex guy just delivered a new 2.1GHz MBP. Got it with 2GB RAM. I haven't taken it out of the box yet, but once I fire it up and transfer stuff from my AlBook I will report back. In the meantime, I have read a few things about the different problems some people have been having. Can someone please let me know what I should be looking for right out of the box. So far, I think I need to look out for:

    1) Airport problems (weak signal with as with other MacIntel machines?)
    2) Whining, "mooing"
    3) Excessive heat. I know it will get hot but some are getting really hot I guess
    4) others?

Also, I would welcome any suggestions as to software/ apps people recommend I load on it. I will be putting word. PS etc on there, but any cool apps are always welcome. I will be putting on little things like CeePeeYou, YouControl iTunes, Transparent Dock etc. As well as Firefox, Skype.

Would be very grateful for any guidance.

I picked up a new MacBook Pro yesterday and my experience is like this:

    1) With my airport express I have no issues with signal I get full signal all over my house.
    2) definitely not, I have to put my ear close to the machine to hear anything
    3) once again no, it is much cooler than my PowerBook G4. I would call it warm there is no way it could be considered HOT.

IMHO people need to stop being paranoid sure a lot of people complain on these forums but that really doesn't mean anything other than a lot of people like to complain on these forums, and most of them seem to be "newbies" anyway.

My MacBook Pro is PERFECT you should open yours and enjoy it. If it is broken welcome to the world of high end technology send it back to get replaced or repaired.

I wouldn't get after the OP for being worried. The MBP has had more than its fair share of trouble.

That said, I think the firmware update licked the mooing, but be on the close lookout for the other issues. I saw a pair at the Apple Store the other day -- one running at a pleasant temperature and one very uncomfortable to type on due to the heat, both the same week's production run (17). So there are still going to be some variances in quality that you do not want to be on the wrong side of. After all, a hot computer will likely be a short-lived one.

Also on Airport, it isn't a matter of a weak signal so much as it is of some kind of bottleneck with the system. You'll pick up networks all over the place, but some run very slow. There has been a pattern of newly introduced Apple laptops playing nasty with certain routers and then being fixed by way of a software update.
