So yeah, I just jumped and bought the MP octo 2.66 and everything else factory for $4,689.39 which includes NY Tax, overnight shipping, and "student" discount ;)

I will keep this thread updated with pics and benchmarks. If you would like to see a specific benchmark performed, post your request. I AM YOUR GUINEA PIG!!!!

Whats with these students having all the cash for the new Mac Pro - what am I doing wrong???

Mac Pro Is Over Kill, what are you going to use it for?

I'm technically a student yet I wouldn't call my Mac Pro overkill. While I don't necessarily *need* the extra power over an iMac, I do make use of it on a regular basis. In fact, I really want an 8 core Mac Pro and I'd be able to make good use of it.

Even with the student discount it sounds too pricey to me. But I guess if you have the cash...

I remember I bought my G5 dual 2.5 in late 2004 for $2700 which was the top of the line tower you could buy. Now top of the line is near $6000. Aren't things supposed to get cheaper during a recession?

Congrats on the new mac.

Thats it - we need more students to kick start this economy. My guess is we will all be out of a job soon and back to school to retrain as teachers so thats more discounts to the masses :D

I think it's a good investment if you wan't to keep the machine for years and upgrade it's internal in the future... Instead of having to buy iMacs every years just to keep you updated.

Well, I graduated 2 years ago and I am using my gf's student status to purchase the MP. Right now I am in the lovely field of marketing and will never EVEr use the full potential power of this MP but someone has to spend during this economy.

That is the thing, I upgrade my laptops ever 6-9 months and wanted to get something concrete that would last me for 2 years+.

Thats so cool. Get student girlfirend, get MP, upgrade ex-student girlfirend for new student girlfriend and upgrade MP when next model comes out.

i think we're all being a little unfair... maybe he's into some really incredibly processor-intensive porn.... he just could be the kind of guy who gets off to an absolutely massive render being done quickly. probably not the first on this forum, either.

i save and plan meticulously, and i'm scared enough about finding work that i was willing to purchase this computer almost exclusively for the purpose of creating motion content and creative editorial stuff for my reel. that's why i "have all the cash" for a mac pro... but now i don't have money for anything else.

I use the "buy new Mac and sell it every year" strategy on portable computers.

As for desktops... I keep them & use them has servers or install another OS

Or could be that you too purchased one :)

Unless he used his credit cards then we'll be in a deeper hole.
