as she has a series 4 and loves it but her iPhone is an iPhone 6 which she hardly uses.

decision is whether its a cheap 6s or7 just to get the update or an XR to last...

@ttforever the list of supported iOS devices being bandied around at the moment suggests iOS 13 won't be made available for the standard iPhone 6 and a 6s is the minimum spec.

So, WatchOS 6, needing a device that has iOS 13 would indeed need a phone upgrade.

This all true, but there's no law or universal requirement that just because WatchOS 6 exists that it NEEDS to be installed on the watch. The OPs wife could just stay on WatchOS 5, and then voila! No new iPhone needed.

Are you guys even reading what @ttforever is writing? He/she is just saying that if you are happy with watchos 5, there is no need to upgrade to watchos 6 (hence, there is no need to get a new phone).

As others have said, if she's fine with staying on WatchOS 5 then you have nothing to worry about. If you do decide to upgrade I wouldn't just get the next model up from the 6 because then you'll be stuck buying a new older phone almost every year as support for the devices continue to drop off. I'd say go with the XR as you mentioned or find a good deal on the X.

you don't need to, you just can't update the watch to os6

watchOS 6 needs iOS 13 which the iPhone 6 wont support

I know, thats why I said - they don't "need" to buy the phone, its only that they can't update to os6 without a new phone, if they're happy on os5 then not a problem

It is a funny thread to read, kind of like a skit playing out.

For whatever reason, it reminded me of Abbott & Costello's Who's On First:
