So I went ahead and ordered a new 1.8 GHz i7 256GB 13" Air that arrived yesterday. It's still nicely on it's box unopened, because I'm debating if I should return it or not and wait for the fall for the new ones.

I wonder: why on Earth did you order it a few days ago if you have those doubts? I seriously don't get it how can people buy on impulse without conducting any though process...

No, you shouldn't keep it. You should mail it to me.

(I generally make it a habit of not buying something unless I'm sure I want to keep it.)

No one ever -needs- a mac, everything can be done without one on a PC or get done somewhere else. So no.

It's inaccurate to make generalizations like this.

If you are a developer of iOS or MacOS apps and want to actually publish them, guess what? You -need- a mac. ;)

Hi,
So I went ahead and ordered a new 1.8 GHz i7 256GB 13" Air that arrived yesterday. It's still nicely on it's box unopened, because I'm debating if I should return it or not and wait for the fall for the new ones. On one hand I don't have urgent need for it, but on the other hand the new ones offer no real upgrades apart from maybe the new intel hd graphics. Retina display is a gimmick as the screen is apparently very good already and I have U2711 at home which I will use on Air nonetheless when I'm at home.

My pristine 2011 maxed out 13" Air goes on sale the day I get the upgraded version. There will be a lot more like mine on the market.

giving it away would be a nice deed.

I wish I were joking or exaggerating, unfortunately I'm not. Apple did make up for the bad luck streak and gave me a free 16gb iPod nano after the 4th iPad 2. And MBPs they exchanged for new ones eventhough I didn't buy it from Apple. Customer service is exceptional and they really stand behind their products, but this bad luck keeps plaguing me. On other hand I had no problems with iPhone 3G and 3GS nor my new iPod Classic and the nano.

I'm on my 5th Mac and have had no issues with any of them, or with my many iPods and my iPhone or iPad. In general, I think Apple defect rates are about average for the industry, but their customer service is above average.

I'm sorta in the same boat. My wife just got me an MBA ultimate for my wedding anniversary gift. I've done a quick check and it looks like it might be due for an upgrade. I have the first gen looking MBA with ssd and I just upgraded that one to Lion and it's slow as heck now. It's stil usable so I'm thinking of returning and waiting for an upgrade. Sound like it'll be worth it.
