I have now managed to make the Mac Pro see the ATI HD 3870x2 by adding a modified driver and it shows up in system profiler displays tab thus:

Now to try to get it to display some video output in OS X

That is awesome. If you were to get there just imagine the possibilities!!! Would like to know, you working with someone else on this or you working alone :) How you'd you do it?

fairly familiar with those pages... Interesting you are able to get the box to recognize the card... you edit the info.plist? I imagine you would still need a driver that would work with OSX...

No not done any .plist editing at all. I wonder if I need to add the device ID 0x950f somewhere and include the 3750x2 plist I came across.

So you are running a Leopard install via an external hard drive to hack on and to try to get the card usable in Leopard right...

Did you use natit and the drivers listed on there? I am curious, On my hackintosh w/ nvidia 8800gts I use the nvinject and edit the apple geforce & NVDANhal kexts (to include my card device ID... then basically nvinject passes "efi" info to OSX for the video card. I have not tried to use a BIOS Rom PC video card (other then flashing my eVGA for the MP) in an actual Mac. My understanding was that it couldn't be done for an actual MAC. If it could...wow. I do see in the future though that all cards will use EFI, but then it's a matter of drivers for the MAC.

http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=35500 Read this thread... yes they had to have the other card to boot OSX etc... but they got cards to work using natiti in their MAC PRO. I think the info.plist needs to be edited for the ATIRadeonX2000.kext to include the device ID. Also to note, others said even on the hacks that they would take a while for the graphics to come up. I would expect it to boot with a black screen, then go blue once the driver loads... if it works. Have you tried hooking a monitor up to it yet?

It's still not recognized by 10.5.3, drivers seem unchanged. Mind you 10.5.4 is just about to land

Well . . .

I see that the single-GPU edition of the 3870 is coming to Mac this month.

Perhaps the next update will add at least 1-GPU support :)

Information

Does anyone know if Newegg or someone sells the required power chords? (And do I need one or two? I've heard both.)

Thanks!

Hi everyone :)

Mercuric Oxide, did you find a way to slow down the fans of your card when on osX ?
I just bought a 4870 and I have the same issue than you ;)

Thanks in advance for your answer ^^

MercuricOxide, I want to get the 4870X2 to put in My 2008 Mac Pro. I have 2 optical bays installed. Will I have to take one out or are the 2 6pin connectors on the motherboard enough.

I have mine powered solely off the motherboard power connectors and it works fine.
