I've seen all the Zune ads now (from the official website), and have to echo the "WTF?" sentiment that most people seem to have. They seem to be trying too hard to manufacture "cool," but don't actually say much about the product itself. In fact most of these ads would go right over most people's heads, especially if they didn't already know what the Zune player was.
Some of them show the wireless sharing feature in action -- but again, unless you already knew about this player and this function, you wouldn't necessarily understand what was going on. They could have actually produced some really clever ads promoting this feature while making it seem essential. But... they didn't.
The "Welcome to the social" slogan is just embarrassing, but it's very possible some kids out there could fall for it, with sites like MySpace being so popular. However, the introductory Zune seems too expensive for the market they're trying to target (youth, who tend to favor nanos and shuffles). And once people buy it, and realize how bulkier, uglier, and limiting it is (can't play iTunes music, too hard to navigate, wireless only within 30 inches and then drains half your battery life), it's destined to die a quick death.
And it's a shame, really. I'd love it if there was another cool mp3 player alternative out there. I'm such an Apple whore, that I doubt I could ever be persuaded to buy anything other than an iPod. But the competition would be nice -- and might drive Apple to make quicker and cooler improvements to their own devices.
But Zune? It's just embarrassing... 🙁
