Hi all,

Just set up my new MBP M1 and I am loving this machine, the combination of Big Sur and the M1 chip is amazing, super snappy and clean.

However, I have a few little issues and just want to see if I can get any help or advice with them:

1. Firstly I changed my Mac account photo to my own one from my photo library (not one pre-installed on the Mac), and it seems to appear everywhere except under the ‘screen time’ settings, which just shows the default image set when I set up the Mac.

2. iCloud tabs, when I opened safari I noticed a load of iPhone tabs (all of which were old tabs not currently open on my iPhone), I deleted them all, but they just keep re-appearing, I tried turning off safari in iCloud on both my phone and Mac, but when I turn them back on they all just re-appear, is this a known bug at the moment?

3. When I received the Mac, I opened the lid and it didn’t switch on (like they normally do) as the battery was completely flat, is this normal, as in the past all devices I have had from Apple have always had at least 30% battery out of the box, just worried it might have been stored with a flat battery for a prolonged period.

4. More of a hardware thing, the casing on the bottom of the MBP doesn’t seem completely flush on all sides, very similar to how the one pictured is, although mine is not as bad, is this normal?

Thanks for any info/help you can give me.

Firstly, congrats on your new M1 mac!

1. I wouldn't worry about it too much as this is probably just a small bug in the screen time settings page. Try re-applying your picture and see if that fixes it.

2. That is very strange, I would try resetting Safari and iCloud to see if that helps otherwise I can't help you that sadly. I don't think it is a known bug at this point in time.

3. Usually they shouldn't be flat unless it has being sitting around in the store or supplier for a long-long time.

4. I wouldn't stress too much about it as hearing your description, it doesn't sound like it's that bad. If it's annoying you too much I would take to an Apple Store and see what they say.

Hi

Thanks for your reply, much appreciated, just a quick update:

1. Found out the reason why screen time showed my original Mac image is because that was applied to the ‘On My Mac’ contact card, I subsequently removed it and now it’s updated just fine.

2. I am still having this issue, after investigating online I noticed a few people have the same but I have narrowed it down to the Mac not updating with my iPhones iCloud tabs, but my iPhone is syncing up perfectly with my macs iCloud tabs… maybe this might just resolve itself in time possibly.

3. I spoke to Apple support about this and they advised me that sometimes they can come with a flat battery depending on how long the Mac has been stored for, but assured me as long as it is charging normally it is perfectly fine.

4. Yeah looking at review videos online it seems to be off by varying degree and presume apple have a certain tolerance level for it, so I have just learned to live with it, if it gets worse I will take it to Apple.

On a side note, I did notice that the number of charge cycles my Mac had out of the box was ‘3’ is that quite normal on a brand new Mac, the battery health is showing as 100%.

If it bothers you return it within the apple return period and order a new one. Just return it to a apple store. And pick up a new one.

To be honest I have had hassle with returns with Apple before (almost being charged £300 for a faulty HomePod and having to speak to them for hours in regards to it), so I try and avoid returns as much as possible.

Plus my closest Apple store is an hours train journey away unfortunately.

4) If the machine wobbles at all, take it back. If that were my machine, I would not accept what appears to be a physical defect on one or more corners.

Per side note: It is not uncommon and really nothing to worry about.

It doesn’t wobble at all, it’s probably just a simple case of loosening the screws and then just seating the plate properly… but not sure…

Also noticed today, as I was giving the screen a bit of a clean, from side on the screen looks to have a sort of ripple on the glass… it’s hard to describe but it’s like a coating of some sort on the glass, you can’t notice it head on only from the side when looking in light… normal or???

The glass seemed smooth when I cleaned over it, so quite possible the waviness could potentially be under the display.

I have seen a few forum members say they noticed a slight ripple. The few replies I saw stated it was normal. I don't know as I have never seen such with any of my Macs that I recall.

As to the casing, you may very well be right. It may amount to nothing. However, I would get it record with Apple and find out whether or not they want you to bring it or remove and get and square yourself. Apple Support chat via iMessage would be the perfect way to do that, in my opinion. That way you have your own proof.

Yeah I will report it to apple just so it’s on file, as I say looking at various review and photos of the MBP online the bottom plate can be off to a varying degree, mine is no where near as bad as the pic posted but it’s definitely not 100% flush

Ah! I forgot the pic was an imposter. :p I hope you enjoy your new Mac, James. :D
It is awesome fair play, just always check if there are any things which seem odd or out of place, due to the cost of these things lol, probably being a bit OCD but no harm in checking

I agree. Anytime you get a new Mac, look it over like you would anything else bought new. Too often people aren't observant like they should be at said time and then notice something after the fact and that can make it harder to sell (read: convince) Apple about.

This is the ripple I am talking about if you zoom into the bottle with the green lid you can see how the reflection is distorted by it…
