I can't seem to find how to make these "layer link sub group arrow things" I have posted a screen grab. I understand what they do, but I am working off a someone else's file and am eager to learn another photoshop tip/workflow.

How do you make these? and what are they officially called.

Just when you think you know PS you get cocky, then you feel like an idiot.

    Anyone?

Those look like clipping masks, but that is just a guess.

Hold down the Alt key and click on the line between the two layers in the Layers palette. Layers above will then only affect the immediate layer below. And yep, they're clipping masks. :)

clipping masks are one of the things i wish Adobe would unify their approach toward. In Illustrator, the clipping mask is on top of everything it contains, in Photoshop it's at the bottom. Why not pick one and go with it?
