Why should they? Apple wouldn't sit back and let MS make money if they had a hit product that everyone wanted (IF).

Well, the thing is that Microsoft's entrance into this market (pending on the success of the Zune) is not likely to turn a profit for years.

However, I do think that Microsoft would eventually have to integrate itself more in the portable music market, and it's difficult to do that without being a hardware manufacturer. Microsoft seems to be taking a top-to-bottom approach to electronic entertainment, with computer home media centers, the xbox, and the zune. The more Microsoft can integrate between its products, the more appealing all of them will be.
