I currently have an iPhone 7 Plus and just received a iPhone 11 Pro Max for Christmas. I'm super excited about the gift but I was originally planning on just waiting it out for the iPhone 12. Seeing as Apple is now going toward 3-year design cycles and this is towards the end of it, I would feel silly to upgrade now so close to the end of the cycle. I'm thinking of two options right now.

1) Keep the phone and resell when the new one is released. I've never resold a phone and I'm not sure how high the resale value would be or what medium I could sell it.

2) Enroll in the iPhone upgrade program now, and upgrade to the new one at the same time in 2020. I understand that I'd have to wait a few months after release, but that's fine with me. I'd then fully pay off the phone and not choose to upgrade in 2021. To me, this seems like the best option since I'd fully pay out the price of the new phone, while paying a little extra to have a newer phone in the months leading up to it.

I'm mostly looking forward to the new generation because of no notch and the return of touchID.

I'd love any input/feedback/thoughts anyone can provide. Thanks!

Thanks for the replies! Does anyone have experience with the iPhone upgrade program? I feel like this option might be better since I don’t really know how to sell phones and their resale values can be unpredictable..

selling expensive gifts shines badly upon your character. You should keep it even if you don't want it unless you don't mind denting your relationship with the giver

To everyone mentioning the giver, it’s my parents and they’re totally fine with me returning it. I’m just trying to make the right decisio

I think you should just keep the gift and sell it when next year's model is introduced.

If you return the gifted iPhone and get a new Pro Max on the iUP now, will your parents be paying the monthly bill on the iUP as your gift for the first year, or will you now be paying for the device yourself?

For the iPhone upgrade program you actually wouldn't have to wait a few months. After you've made 6 months of payments you can pay to upgrade early if you want. If you started now that would be more than six months. I've been on the upgrade program since it launched several years ago and I love it.

My parents would be paying it as a gift for the first year.

If I were to keep it and resell, it seems that the trade-in value wouldn't be as high though, right? For example, trading in an XS Max to Apple right now is a value of up to $600, and then I would have to pay for the phone which would be about $700 additional.

If I were to do the upgrade program through September it would be about ~$500, and then I can use the gift money to pay for the new phone.

It seems to me like the iUP is the safest bet for getting your money's worth, right?

What would you be buying on iUP since you already have the 11PM as a gift?

I would return the 11PM and enroll in the iUP to get the 11PM, except I would be able to upgrade in the Fall to the new one which I've been waiting for.

Now that I'm looking, it seems like the cost of enrolling in the iUP and upgrading 10 months in is about $500, which is similar to the difference in pay if I kept the phone and traded it in in September.

in that case, I’d go with the iUP: it’s such an easy swap.
