Keeping my old 2009 MacBook Pro for a special function

I have this 2009 laptop w/El Capitan and 4gb---1 of 3, I have. Want to use it for an older favorite photo editor only. Apple won't let it migrate anymore. Since I need Bing images I will have to get online not for cruising. Recommend a safe compatible browser and email? My editor would allow an update to Sierra if a disk would allow since Apple won't. Ebay still has Sierra disks if they will work. Many thanks for any info!

Apple never put out a Sierra disc. It came as a download from the App Store.

2009 MacBook Pros don’t run anything past El Capitan without the use of one of Dosdude’s patchers.

If you use El Cap, Safari is still working ok for now.

If Safari starts choking, I'd try Firefox.
There are "extended versions" for older iterations of the OS.

The latest Chrome runs on El Capitan. Safari is somewhat outdated.
