id get one of the locks that fits into the lock place on the PB i used one on my iBook and now on my PB. it prevents from someone running off with your laptop or borrowing it for devious application (like a prank). when i was living in a drom (before an apt) i even used a password on my screen saver, that way if i steped away for a couple minutes noone would do something like set my homepage to porn or such. . . ah, freshman year in the dorm, how mature everyone was. if someone REALLY wants to steal it you cant get anything to protect against bolt cutters, but at least with a lock noone will be drunk and walk off with the wrong laptop!

Wow. Wish I'd had this to worry about back when I went to school....back when men were men, comp sci majors were geeks with glasses, and laptops were unwieldy bricks. But I digress. :)

It's really kind of scary how easy it is to break into dorms....at my school all you had to do was come into the building behind someone who'd hold open the door for you, then use something like a Blockbuster card to jimmy the room door (forgot our keys once).

Still, most thieves can be encouraged to find a more tempting target by the right amount of inconvenience. A cable lock, or locking file cabinet or drawer, will probably be enough to deter most of them. Nothing will protect you from the ones that aren't discouraged by such minor precautions, so renter's or other insurance might be worthwhile too.

Along with that, regular backups should be mandatory. You wouldn't want an entire semester's work to go poof! during exam week.
