keeping track of backup files

I am in the process of backing up a lot of files. They will span 30-40 cd / DVD 's. does anyone know of a good way to catalogue these so that i can just look up what file i need and it will tell me what CD it is on? I don't know if retrospect, etc. do this , but i am looking for something simpler. I don't need all the auto backup stuff and things like that. I just don't want to have to hunt through a bunch of disks. thanks

It depends on whether you are going to be changing a large proportion of these files and how many half-filled disks you can have/afford. It might be easier to buy an external hard drive. 🙂
