Very likely a bad GPU and not really anything you can do to fix it other than having Apple replace the logic board.

Thats what I was thinking it was... I have had the computer since for about 4 years and this is the second time the GPU has pooped out on me... do you think there is some way I can get them to fix it without forking out $300?

Did they charge you $300 the last time? If so you may be able to get that refunded due to the repair program that was out on these models. It's supposed to extend 3 years. You might be able to argue it given past problems. I thought it was worth mentioning in case it gives you any leverage.

i have the same model year mbp as you. the only way i have been able to stop the KP is to roll back to snow leopard. i tried clean install of mavericks and even went back to mountain lion but the KP's were still happening. i then installed snow leopard and for 3 days now there hasn't been any gpu-related crashes. or, any crashes for that matter! i even worked on a long video project using final cut express 4 (fcpx is not compatible w/ snow leopard) on purpose to see if my computer will crash and it didn't.

somehow, my computer is fine with snow leopard 10.6.8! stable as able.

you should try rolling back to snow leopard and see if that will work for you. if your computer is MBP 6,2 then snow leopard is the OS that originally came w/ your computer. you will need the grey apple DVD discs that came with your computer to do this.

if you do decided to have apple diagnose the computer for you, make sure to ask them to run the Apple Video Systems Test. i did that with mine and mine failed. they told me that i needed to replace the logic board and quoted me a price. i couldn't afford it so i left the store.

so my story is that i still have the original logic board on mine and it's working fine with snow leopard. of course, i am stuck in snow leopard country for the time being or perhaps forever depending on whether Apple can do a software patch for these model mbp's to be able to run mavericks without crashing.

so it seems that my logic board hates mavericks and mountain lion but loves snow leopards.

PS--My Kernel Panic reports are exactly the same as yours. so your GPU is not "bad." it still works but it will crash when using Mavericks or Mountain Lion (from my experience) for some reason or other that no one here has yet identified.

PSS--my computer is fine in snow leopard as well playing COD: Modern Warfare!!!! weird huh?

    Snow Leopard

Interesting that Snow Leopard appears to resolve the GPU issues. This to me provides some evidence that Apple could correct the issue with a software or firmware update. Amazing that they have not for this long.

I am now debating going back to SL or installing a Linux distro on mine.

ok. first crash playing COD: MW Free-For-All 48 Player map.

i was 3 games into it. i think. 30 mins or so before my screen went blank, computer still running and an audio looping sound.

i had to to do a hard shutdown to get it back up and then saw this report:

I suspect that you do have a hardware problem, which will be resolved by replacing the logic board.
I further suspect that the video issue is simply closer to the "edge" in the later OS X, and reverting to the older Snow Leopard just took you back a step or two to a more stable driver - but doesn't really fix your problem. - And, you may now conclude that similar "punishment" of the graphics card results in similar crashes ...

yeah. something is awry. i just played COD again and no crash this time for 25 mins. i don't know.

i give up. i can't really afford to replace the logic board anyway.

I really appreciate the insight. Um, yeah they told me that it would be ~$300 and this is the second GPU replacement in just under 4 years... I never do anything graphic intensive. The only thing I can think of is Skyping... which I dont think that is very intensive. Anyways, I'm going to make my way over there and be like look, my computer is worth ~700 right now and ~300 to fix it doesnt make any sense at all. Its like putting $3000 into a $7000 car... it does not make it a $10,000 dollar car. Anyhow, good luck with your crashes, I've had some bad ones in the middle of big projects and professors never buy it.

bad logic board, i had mine replaced due to the recall, depending on when you purchased it, you may be able to get it replaced for free like i did back in august or september
