I'm getting a Kernel panic when I try and boot into snow leopard from both my internal drive AND from the Snow Leopard install DVD... this type:

"you need to restart your computer. hold down the power button until it turns off, then press the power button again."

However I can boot into windows via bootcamp absolutely fine and I also just ran a windows 'Memtest' boot disk fine (DVD), and there are apparently no problems with my RAM.

If I boot the MacBook Pro in target mode I can see my Mac partition and copy from it succesfully, so I'm not afraid about losing data... but how in the hell am I going to reinstall Snow Leopard if I can't boot the install DVD?

    It's a MacBook Pro 17" purchased in September 2007. Model A1229.
    2.4GHz Core 2 Duo. 2GB RAM. OSX v10.6.2
