I'm getting kernal panics everyday on my iMac 27" 2011 model. Sometimes it takes 3 startups as it kernal panics a lot. And once it has started up successfully it will do it randomly in the day. So annoying! I've repaired disk permissions and reinstalled Lion but it hasn't fixed it.

Can someone help? Here is a log of one of them, cheers:

Do you use ethernet or wifi to connect? Also, try uninstalling Parallels. It's the top kext. I had nonstop crashes and kernel panics since upgrading to Lion. I might have finally figured it out. I uninstalled Parallels (along with a few other things) and i think i have my crashes down to: Parallels, Boom, Flash. I just added Flash back. If i get no crashes in a few days, i'll try Boom again too. Parallels is done though, regardless as i have no use for it. Just an idea.

Hi

Im using wifi and did see some of the posts about the wifi causing kernel panics, however i'm too far away from the router to use an ethernet port.

Thanks for the suggestion i have uninstalled Parallels and so far have not had a panic (touch wood) hopefully this has solved it.

Reminds me of this thread.

If you added memory recently, namely third party memory, remove the memory and try with the factory RAM that was supplied. More than half the issues I see with kernel panics are related to memory.

Well, for me it wasn't Parallels, Boom, or even Flash. (Flash i'm not 100% sure) Looks like it might have been iStat Menus or my wifi. Went to ethernet and uninstalled iStat Menus last night. We'll see how that goes. Apple should make logs way easier to decipher. :(

Did you do a clean re-install or re-install using archive and install? What programs did you install after you did the re-install of Lion?

If it were me I would be calling AppleCare to try and get that resolved.

I just used the Lion recovery menu and clicked re-insall lion.

I thought after uninstalling parallels it had fixed it but just now i had 2 trying to start up! i have uninstalled istat, I'm hoping that may fix it. btw i still have the same RAM that the computer came with:

How much RAM are you running?

If you are running additional RAM, what BRAND is it?

EDIT: Looks like 4GB, so none was added?

Yep I havn't touched the RAM.

Ive heard it's could be becaus it's using wifi, so people say use Ethernet, but that's hardly a satisfactory fix :(

I wonder if the wifi problem is somehow tied to the processor?

I have a new 27" but with the 3.4 Ghz i7.

So far no issues at all with it however keeping a close eye on it, making note of changes I do make so if a problem arises I have a decent starting point for troubleshooting.

Tomorrow I boost the ram with 3rd party memory.

Pulling out all the Apple RAM and installing all new 3rd party stuff.

Won't add any software or do any updates for a few days after that to track how it behaves with the new RAM.

Good luck with yours, I wish I could help.

I've had 3 chronic kernel panic issues on 2 different machines.
-faulty RAM module.
-one was caused by a messed up superdrive.
-and the final was due to a software glitch with my capture card.

The top two were diagnosed fairly easily with a trip to the Apple store. The last one I had to figure out.

is your Mac still under warranty? - if so call Apple Tech support.
it may just be a hardware issue

Kernel panics are actually most likely hardware issues; typically RAM or sometimes the hard drive. If re-installing the OS didn't help then doing it again won't help either.

Most "2011 iMacs" would be under warranty, so the best thing is to have Apple look at the problem.

I think its the airport card or driver thats causing it. thats what the report says anyway. can you disable wifi and try using it that way for awhile. also disable bluetooth at the same time

Cheers for the advice everyone.

Unfortunately I live pretty far from any apple store, so I'd probably have to send it away :(

Regarding the airport card suggestion. If that is the case, and turning off Bluetooth and connecting it by Ethernet fixes it. What do I do then? Is that a hardware fault? Or would some kind of driver update fix it?
Thanks

its difficult to say apple is currently having issues with the wifi right now since this last update. your guess is as good as mine when they will get around to fixing it. so i dont know if thats part of the problem or an entirely different issue.

I just used the Lion recovery menu and clicked re-insall lion.

I thought after uninstalling parallels it had fixed it but just now i had 2 trying to start up! i have uninstalled istat, I'm hoping that may fix it. btw i still have the same RAM that the computer came with:

Have you tried not installing the rogueamoeba software and the Soundflower software and see if that helps? I would also suggest that you do a clean install of Lion and install nothing else. If you still get kernel panics then you probably have a hardware problem that Apple needs to address for you.

I went a full day without and freezes or crashes, so i think my issue was Wifi or iStat Menus.

Is there a known issue with the WiFi causing a kernel panic? I have a 2011 27" iMac and I use WiFi but I have never experienced a kernel panic since I installed Lion. I am running 10.7.3. Just curious.

PS: I know that 10.7.3 introduced a WiFi reconnect issue for iMacs after wake from sleep. I am having that issue intermittenly.

Don't!

also disable bluetooth at the same time

Acutally, DON'T.

Finding the cause of a problem is a process of elimination. When changing things, always change one thing at a time and retest. Here's why:

Suppose his problem goes away. Was is bluetooth or was it WiFi? He still needs another round of testing to eliminate either one.

In this case things aren't as bad as you might think, however, so don't feel offended. To exclude causes the number of tests required is equal to the factorial of the changes you made. With two changes you need two additional tests to make the call. His total number of required tests is three, and it would have been two had he changed one thing at a time. The penalty this time is just one additional test.

However, if you change four parameters at a time in troubleshooting you would need another 1*2*3*4 = 24 tests to make sure one of those four did indeed solve your problem.

Always change one thing at a time, while troubleshooting. It might seem tedious, but it saves you incredible amounts of time in the end.

I should also add that my iMac is running about 10-30 degrees (Fahrenheit) cooler without iStat Menus running. Not sure why, but it's running between 90-100 where it was typically running 120 with iStat Menus running.

I thought that was all 10.7 versions? Users have been complaining from gold master to most recent. And it survives all the firmware patches.

Didn't Apple release an update today for Wifi? I thought i read that somewhere. I haven't ran software update yet today.
