    Hi guys!

I have a Mid-2012 13" MBP (2.5 GHz Core i5, 4 GB RAM, HD4000 Graphics). I replaced the mechanical hard drive with the SSD from my Dell notebook. I split the drive into two 128 GB partitions - my Windows 10 partition on one, the other being a fresh HFS+ partition with OS X El Capitan (10.11.4) on it.

Whenever I close the lid of the computer (putting it into sleep) and come back after a few hours, it panics.

I open the lid. I hear the SuperDrive power up, and the screen lights up black for a few seconds. Then it reboots to a white screen in multiple languages saying "Your computer restarted because of a problem. Press a key or wait a few seconds to continue starting up."

Here is a copy of the latest kernel panic log -- not even 15 minutes ago.

Any help on diagnosing what it is would be great. I'm thinking it either doesn't like the generic SSD from Dell or it doesn't like being partitioned.

If I had to guess I'd say it's the partitioning that's the issue unless you use boot camp for you Windows partition it may cause issue.

If you're only getting a problem while waking for sleep, I would suggest doing the steps in the following:

    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/tssleepimage.html

I also have the 2012 13" MBP but don't have the same issues. Disclaimer: I have not tried what they suggested in the link so I have no idea if it works or not. If the steps outlined in the link above don't work and you didn't have issues with the SSD in the Dell and were using it recently, it could be the drive cable (not uncommon for the cable to work with a HDD but have issues with the SSD). This would be more likely if you have an older 2012 model (they're still making them). Because this would require spending money, you should try to rule out other issues first. The "last loaded kext ... com.apple.filesystems.msdosfs" may suggest that it's a problem with the Windows 10 partition but I've had this happen in Yosemite when I had no Windows or MS-DOS file system involved.

Did you update the firmware on the SSD to the latest available version, before you put it in your MBP? If not, I would do that.

Unfortunately, that means putting it back into the Dell, booting it from a supported Windows version (see following link), downloading the firmware update, and then running it to update the drive.

So I have had EXACTLY this problem when updating my mid-2012 non-retina macbook pro do a samsung 850 EVO SSD recently. After doing some searching it seems this is a common (ish) problem that I could not find a consistent solution for. I do not think it is linked to the partition, I think it is because of the new standby mode that apple introduced in 2012 for it's retina line of macbook pros that come with and SSD. The solution I have found is using the "pmset" command in the terminal to turn off standy mode. Your MBP will still go to sleep just fine, it just won't use that particular deep sleep standby mode which uses virtually no power when activated. I find that with standby disabled, my machine never kernel panics, and battery drain in sleep mode is good. I lose less than 1% batter per hour.

Here is how to do it:

    1. Open terminal app
    2. Type "pmset -g"
    3. Look at the list that is generated - if included in the list is "standby 1" - you want to change this to standby 0
    4. To do this, type the following into the terminal command line: "sudo pmset -a standby 0"
    5. Give your password when prompted
    6. You should now not get kernel panics after sleep

Let me know if this works for you
    --- Post Merged, Mar 31, 2016 ---
Also - if you still get kernel panics you can use the pmset command to change "disksleep" to 0 as well - which I have done. Not sure if you need both of these values set to 0 or just the standby one.

I completely wiped the drive and installed OS X again. SSD firmware is already latest. OS X is the ONLY thing on the drive.

It just happened again. Log below.

    I used the
    Code:
    sudo pmset -a standby 0
command to disable Standby mode, and then went to classes around 1 or 2 PM. Came back home at 4:05, opened my MacBook up, and it didn't panic.

Ultimate test will be when I put it to sleep tonight and grab it in the AM. I'll try it a few more times and see if it's good to go. But I'm thinking this may have been the trick...
