I have been having the same issue. Ever since 10.8.2 I will just hit the grey screen and have a kernel panic. It is slightly irritation. I want to do a fresh install but it is always so much work to rebuild from scratch.

Uninstalling Dropbox fixed it for me

I had what sounds like the same symptoms. I tried various things but in the end what definitely fixed it for me was uninstalling Dropbox [I'm running Lion 10.7.5]
Its been 48 hours now with no crash and I was previously getting it 4 or 5 times a day.

i also had some kernel panics for a while.

i ran techtool pro on my macbook pro which found some corrupted files which i deleted.

then i ran diskwarrior over it.

there are no more kernel panics and it's starts up faster now too.

they are expensive tools to buy but i'd still recommend them.

and of course always backup your system before using them.
