Hi,
Having some issues with a 2019 MBP 16". It belonged to my dad and when he died last year it was given to me. Since then, it has been experiencing kernel panics with a loud short blast of the fans before shutting down (then constantly trying to restart) when running on battery, with lid closed and if it goes idle.
Temporary "fix" for this was to leave it plugged in and turned on at all times, making sure the display never went to sleep. When it was in this state, it was fine. Obviously this wasnt ideal so I reluctantly cleared SSD yesterday and reinstalled the OS (sounds silly but as it was my dads, I didnt want to do this, but I did).
After install, the OS booted and I was using it for a couple of hours with no problems, plugged in, never leaving it to go idle. Then, I started investigating to see if the kernel panic had been fixed. In short, it hasnt. I closed the lid for half an hour to see what would happen and it started the panic cycle. Then, I tried it in multiple conditions and the cycle continued. Finally, I reset the machine to factory settings in internet recovery mode, which reinstalled Monterrey. Seemed to be ok but I noticed it was in safe mode so restarted it. Cue, the cycle begins again.
Now, even when plugged in, it wont boot consistently in anything but safe mode. I left it idle overnight in safe mode and I woke up to it still powered on, no panics. Ive been trying to get it to boot now for the past hour and its just going around in circles, plugged in.
I've ordered some screwdrivers to open it up and clean the fans but in the meantime I'm keen to get it up and running as I use this computer for videography and I'm way behind schedule on a project.
I wondered if anybody else had any experience with this issue to this extent and could advise? The battery is in need of a service so my instincts are saying its either that or GPU (it being fine in safe mode has helped me draw this conclusion).
I've just read this post and my next step is going to be to install that version of Sonoma but I'm not holding out much hope as it was happening on Monterrey.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you. I'm losing my mind with this.
Worth mentioning that I took this to Apple about 6 months ago and they found no hardware faults and recommended a clean install, which I have now done to no avail
