I am very new to Linux. I am trying to breathe new life into my aging Mac Pro 5,1. I've managed to get Ubuntu installed and working on a separate hard drive, and I've used it for about a month. However, it recently did some updates, and now it will not boot, and gives me a kernel panic, saying "VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)".
I've tried to research fixes, and I understand this is a known issue with Ubuntu updates, and I need to do something with the "initramfs". Instructions say to access the "GRUB menu" by pressing or holding Esc while booting. Nothing I've tried works.
I turn on the machine, hold down option to get the boot menu, select the second drive to boot from, and I'm greeted with many lines of text that seem to reference my hard disks, and something about "rolling not happening" (This screen always appeared but was followed by the purple Ubuntu loading screen). Now it simply hangs on the text screen if I press the Esc key, or it switches to the Kernel Panic screen if I press nothing.
I've tried booting from the USB that I installed with, and that gets me a GRUB menu, but no option works. Trying to "Try or Install Ubuntu" gets me a black screen with a single "_".
OSX (10.13.6) works just fine with no issues, so I don't think its a hardware problem.
Option A, I'd like to get Ubuntu working again. Option B, I'd like to at least get some files off the Ubuntu drive, but OSX can't mount the disk, and I don't have any other computer that I could put the drive into. Any one have any ideas?
