Stuck in the middle with you
Ok, I think I just had a kernel panic. I was trying to reformat an external hard drive with Disc Utility and it gave me some errror message, and my internal hard drive wasn't showing up on my desktop anymore. I tried to shut down through the apple menu, but no go. So I just pressed the power button (I have a PB). Except that it didn't ask me if I wanted to shut down like it usually did, it just went. Then, when I turned it back on, my fan went to warp speed 9 and scared the crap out of me for a few seconds.

1. was this a kernel panic?

2. what is a kernel panic?

3. are they bad?

No, it wasn't a kernel panic. When you have a kp your screen turns gray and tells you you need to restart your computer. You experienced some sort of software/hardware glitch (not a kp). It happens. If it doesn't happen again, chalk it up to a software bug or a cosmic ray.
