Why did my keyboeard stop repeating? When I hold down a key instead of repeating, I get a little popup above the letter showing symbols. How do I get the repeat back? Thanks

You are obviously using Mac OS X 10.7 Lion or OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion: How Do I Enable Key Repeat In OS X Mountain Lion?

System preferences then click on keyboard. Check your settings noting it says repeat being long, short, or off. System preferences hasn't changed since mac is x came into existance.
Yes, call it iOSification, like it or not this is where Mac OS, sorry, just OS X, is going!
And someone is still waiting, me included, for a new Mac Pro...

I have to say that seems more useful than retaining the ability to do this:

Why not just hold down option and shift while typing to get new letters?

You make it sound like it is a bad thing. Snow Leopard is still the best OS in my opinion. I was actually on Lion for about 9 months on my Mac Pro trying to get used to it. Yesterday I got fed up and decided to go back to SL for Exposé and Spaces and I love it.
My only worry was lack of iCloud support on SL, but this helped:

to find weird carachters PopChar is still the best solution, while for those that frequently need a specific key, key modifiers are much faster than the iOS solution.
I often type on US keyboard and for the italian accented vocals I find much faster the alt + e or alt + `followed by the vocal than the iOS solution.

Interesting, but I am not sure how reliable it can be, especially in the long term. Though an iTools user since its announcement at the MacWorld more than 10 years ago, I have shifted to the Apple iCloud thing only two years ago coming from the Palm environment and I rely massively on calendar synchronization.
That solution is great, but I do not feel comfortable with it so I moved to L and ML: I still have an HD with SL, for my statistic app (InStat) but the die is cast. This is another important move: it's the fourth in 10 years, probably too much. OS 9--> OS X; 68k --> PPC; PPC--> Intel; OS X --> iOSificated OS X

I've liked every OS X upgrade right up until Lion.
