Keyboard backlight issues

My backlight on my keyboard on macbook pro randomly shut off and they won't turn on. I tried the f5 and f6 keys and nothing happens. I went into the system preferences and made sure the lighting was checked for low lighting areas and nothing happens. What should I do to fix this?

Make sure "automatically adjust" under the display option under sys pref is unchecked so that the light sensor doesn't automatically control the back lit keyboard.

I tried that and nothing happened. The weird thing is was it was working about a half hour ago and it just shut off and i didn't even do anything.
