Do the F5 and F6 keys not work?

Is there no "Illuminate keyboard in low light conditions" check box in System Preferences > Keyboard >> Keyboard?

This may be dumb, but this is a macbook pro, not the unibody aluminum macbook, right?

Not if it is a 2009 or 2010 model. Only the 13" Aluminium MB from late 2008 with the 2GHz CPU had no backlight, the 2009 and 2010 13" MBPs have backlit keys.
