I have a client who has a really odd issue with his iPhone 1/2G. When he calls up the keyboard in e-mail, SMS, or Settings (portrait mode), the bottom row will not work ... so no numbers, spaces, etc., can be entered. The remaining rows work fine.

Here's the curious part ... when we start up Safari, the bottom of the screen works fine (can pull up bookmarks, etc.) ... so, that would seem to indicate that the "touch" sensor is actually OK. We also tried the keyboard in landscape mode in Safari, and ALL of the keys work ... even the "Q" and "P" at the extreme edge of the screen.

He's running the latest version 2.2.1.

We've tried all of the reset options, hard & soft (under settings as well as the home screen/power button reset), as well as a complete system restore from iTunes. No change.

He's pretty sure he's out of warranty coverage with no AppleCare, so about his only option if we can't fix it at this point is to get a new iPhone 3G. He'd prefer to continue with the one he's got as he doesn't NEED the 3G connectivity.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Apple has a page for this:

Diagnosing the touchscreen

Although it might not fit your case, I've read that Apple will replace phones with bad touchscreens within a certain serial number range, even if out of warranty.

Thanks!! This looks like it fits perfectly!! Luckily, we do have an Apple Store relatively nearby.

Thanks to all who responded ... appreciate the assistance!!
