Best and thinnest keyboard cover you can get is the Moshi keyguard that Apple sells also.
It's good and won't damage anything, otherwise i doubt they would sell their website.

Do you have a link? Can't find it on french Apple storage website.

I've heard that if you get debris under the cover, it basically traps it, which may cause more problems then it solves. Plus given the tight tolerances of the MBP, would it not leave marks on the display when you close the lid?

Then don't get it under the cover.
It wouldn't, the tolerances aren't that tight and don't need to be that tight.
But if you flip or stand the MacBook up the cover may detach and touch the screen, leaving oil marks on it.

I think apple decided to stop selling such accessories, but they used to sell it.
Perhaps because of the issues of having dirt trapped. My concern as noted above is the tight space as it is, throw in the cover and it may cause issues. Also what about heat, since heat does escape from the keyboard.

I read somewhere in the apple website that Apple is recommending not to use any type of keyboard covers on their new macbook as it can avoid screen damage. I was trying to find the link to share it here... but could not find them again. pls check it once.

I have personally decided not to use any cover on my 2016/17/18 MBPs because the tolerances are so tight that anything you put above the keys will eventually end up touching the screen. Maybe not if you always keep the laptop on a table, but grab it and move it around, put it in a bag or otherwise exercise even a slight pressure on the screen, and it will.

I don't think Apple would recommend against doing it if that weren't the case. If they could make money by selling you one more accessory, you can bet they would.
