Apple recommends that you do not cover the keyboard but I see many people with them. Has anyone damaged their mac with one?

That's a personal choice.

But keep in mind that the keyboard of the MBA is used as a hot air escaping "route".

I've never used one but I think there are plenty who do and I haven't really heard of any bad stories due to their use... It's tempting with my brand new MBA to get one but I haven't yet.

I would recommend it. Helps prevent shiny keyboard due to finger grease. Recently gotten a moshi clearguard and must say it's been great.
