I purchased a new MBA 13 about a week ago. All is mostly going well except that the keyboard illumination will not shut down, regardless of the level of the ambient light in the room. This happens whether the box is checked or not in the keyboard system settings. As a result of this (I think), the battery life is very disappointing.

Has this happened to anyone else and is there a quick fix, or do I need to take it back to Apple?

If you're convinced you have got the right setting then give apple a call - it can't hurt to see what they say. I doubt it is really impacting battery life enough to the point where it is very disappointing though - I have a nasty feeling you will be disappointed with battery life without keyboard backlighting at all.
