So if apple is going to control the keyboard illumination, right down to whether it can or cannot turn on and how bright or weak it is, then why do they devote three keys for changing the illumination? Is it to give the illusion that we have a choice? I wouldn't even care except that they happen to be the keys I use for dashboard, which I use much more often than the keyboard illumination. (Which is in my opinion pretty useless anyways since it's really only useful to people who have to look at the keyboard to type. Sure is pretty though, and nice to show off.)

If you don't like how the F-keys use default to system hardware features (volume, brightness, and keyboard) it is possible to return them to default "software" function keys. Go to System Preferences > Mouse and Keyboard > Keyboard and select "Use the F1-F12 keys to control software features"

If you want to use control hardware features you must not press the fn key plus the corresponding F-key.

    Hopefully this helps!

Yes that does help, but now I can't use the volume controls without pressing the fn key. Is there any way to apply this just the F9-F12 keys?
