Upstate NY . Was FL.
I was just browsing eBay like one does to see how much the 16” mbp go for used and came across one with keyboard marks on the display. Was wondering is this issue common ?

Not a common issue but it can happen if someone places something on top of their MacBook Pro or it's squeezed by objects in a book carry bag or back pack.

I've travelled lots with 4 different MacBooks since 2011 and they all did this. Even when in lightly loaded bags. The tolerances are so fine that any pressure on the lid causes contact and rubbing.

Apple has actually replaced screens for me several times claiming "this shouldn't happen" but I've never pushed for a repair myself. Awesome customer service in these situations.

Unfortunately, yes, scary reminder of the staingate period.

I guess it is in part some fatty substance that is left on the keys that make contact with the screen. Regular cleaning (for me, about once a month) with a very soft cloth, the ones used for glasses and camera lenses, to prevent built-up of dust and other particles that may become abrasive when cleaning is recommended. Careful circular motion will get rid of most marks; no fast wiping or pressure or you might damage the anti-reflective layer of the screen. I use a cleaning agent specifically made for glasses that helps, applied to the cloth before cleaning, not directly to the screen. But don't just use any cleaning agent, only ones that are designed for cleaning glass with protective/anti-reflective layers such as the ones for glasses or camera lenses.

OP:

Do you carry the MBP in a backpack?
If so, is there "other stuff" in it, pressing against the closed MBP?

My old laptops did this, but my 16 definitely does it more. I barely even transport the computer (with COVID I barely work outside my home), but it seems like they always come back quick after a screen wipe.

Happens on my 16" and it's not travelled anywhere yet! Just gets used at home and the lid closed at night. Keeping an eye on it.
