Keyboard not working with extension cable

I just got a new 27" iMac (new style) and I am trying to get the Mac Keyboard to work with an extension cable (6 feet). The keyboard works when plugged directly into the computer, but not with the extension cable. Any ideas??

Does the extension work with other devices? Are you using the one that comes with the keyboard or a different one?
 
The extension worked with my other iMac and an external drive on the other iMac, just not the new one. I even bought a new extension cable and no joy.
