Hi. I know that apple used the butterfly mechanism on both of these versions. My question is that there seems to be a lot of issues with the 2016 model. Is the keyboard less prone to problems in the 2017 model or is it exactly the same? Thank you for any insight.

An apple store employee told me that the keyboards are the same, minus key cap changes. The new models certainly feel better than the 2016s, though.

What exactly is the keyboard issue. I'm about to purchase a 2017 15" MBP-tb next week. I'm concern. Is this a reliable laptop?

So far ive had mine for 3 weeks... everything seems fine so far. also read articles of people with 2015 macbooks that have butterfly mechanism and they've owned theirs for 2 years and no issues

I think Apple made some kind of subtle change to the 2017 keyboard vs. the 2016 keyboard, probably to help it be more reliable. And that's why they changed the symbols on the 2017 keyboard--so you could tell at a glance that it was a 2017 keyboard and not a 2016 keyboard.

Get ready for a $900 top case replacement.

Best suggestion is to ask Apple to cover the cost of top case replacement, and to immediately sell it once repaired.

nah i live with the problem until i replace the computer :) would never spend money on a repair unless its not possible to use the computer without

Get used to either using backspace a lot to erase the double "b" entry or hitting the "b" key repeatedly to get it to register. And just wait until other keys start failing . . .

If you experience problems with the 2016/2017 MBP keyboard, get a can of compressed air and clean it according to Apple's instructions:
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT205662

In my opinion, the keyboard is very sensitive to dirt. A single crumb from a cookie or sandwich will make keystrokes unreliable. I always have a full can of compressed air available.

I agree. I've also observed that when a key gets stuck due to such an obstruction, pressing it harder to make it work will sometimes damage the keyboard to a point that necessitates replacement. :(
