Keyboard Shortcut From Games?

Does anyone know of a keyboard shortcut to get to the desktop from a game. I play some games like Phantom EFX casino games that take up the entire screen. I can hear a ding through the speakers when I get a new email. But I always have to exit the game completely to get to the desktop. Is there any quick shortcut to see the open applicantion icons or to get to the desktop without exiting and closing the game?
