On my 2012 macbook pro retina 15"
Only the top row of keys word and the delete key works.
I believe this is a software issue because I plugged in an external keyboard and only the same keys work.
It requires a restart to fix in mavericks.

Something similar happened back in mountain lion where keys would stop functioning for about 10 seconds. In mavericks, it stops forever until a restart...
