Keyboard Text Replacement

Suddenly my keyboard text replacement short cuts (eg type tks and get thanks) have stopped working. I have tried all different settings in preferences etc but cannot seem to get them working again. Have I inadvertently set some switch off or pressed a wrong combination of keys or a rare function key?
